Build Up Justice NYC (“BUJNYC,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. We recognize the importance of protecting the privacy of individuals. This Website privacy policy (the “Policy”) explains how we use, disclose, and protect the Personal Information we collect from and about you when you visit our website, https://buj.org (the “Website”) and any websites and online services owned and/or operated by BUJNYC that link to or reference this Policy (collectively, the “Services”). “Personal Information” is defined as any information that identifies, could be used to identify, or otherwise relates to an individual person.
Please review this Policy, which is incorporated into the BUJNYC Terms of Use (the “Terms”). If you do not agree to our Policy or Terms, you should not use the Services.
2. Personal Information We Collect
a) Personal Information you provide voluntarily
We collect your Personal Information if you voluntarily provide it to us, including, for example, when you contact us via the Website, fill out an online form or survey posted to the Services, or otherwise interact directly with us via online channels. The Personal Information we collect may include:
- Contact information, such as your name, phone number, physical address, and e-mail address;
- Comments, questions, and requests you may make via the Services;
- Information about your preferences, such as your preferred methods of communication and the types of information in which you are interested;
- Details of your donations;
- Records and copies of your correspondence (including email addresses and phone numbers), if you contact us; and

b) Personal Information we collect automatically
We may automatically certain Personal Information about your behavior as you navigate the Services, including information regarding your computer or mobile device, through a variety of technical methods, including cookies and web beacons, embedded scripts, and other online technologies (“Online Tracking Technologies”). We may collect Personal Information from third parties, including our service providers, vendors, and business partners, as well as publicly-available sources. Such third party sources may include our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter. For example, we may receive your Personal Information that has been shared on our social media pages, including through an application or form that links to this Policy. We may also receive the Personal Information from third-party social media sites if you comment on our social media posts or tag BUJNYC in other posts.
3. How We Use Your Personal Information
We use your Personal Information to provide and operate the Services. This includes:
- To provide the Services: We may use Personal Information to provide and support the Services, including operating the Website and maintaining our systems.
- To communicate with you and respond to your requests: We may use your Personal Information to communicate with you, personalize our Services based on your interests, and process your requests.
- Analyzing and improving the Services: We may run calculations, aggregate, normalize, clean, enhance, and make derivative works of the information obtained about you in order to:
- Understand and analyze usage trends and preferences;
- Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of the Services;
- Improve the Services and develop new products, services, features, and functionalities; and
- Test the Services and our infrastructure to make sure the Website is working correctly.
- Legal proceedings and requirements or fulfilling contractual obligations: We may use your Personal Information to investigate or address claims or disputes relating to use of BUJNYC’s services, to satisfy requirements under applicable laws, regulations, or operating licenses or agreements, including requirements that apply to BUJNYC in its capacity as service provider or contractor for another entity, or pursuant to legal process or governmental request, including from law enforcement.
- Marketing: If you provide your contact information to us and agree to receive marketing communications, we will provide you with materials that could be useful, relevant, valuable, or otherwise of interest to you, such as our newsletter, updates about services and products offered by us, and fundraising campaigns. You can unsubscribe from receiving such emails as described in the “Your Choices” section, below.
- Other notified purposes. We may use your Personal Information for other notified purposes that we describe to you at the time we collect your information
4. How We Disclose Your Personal Information
We may disclose your Personal Information as follows:
a) To service providers, vendors, and other third parties that help us provide the Services
We may engage service providers, vendors, and other third parties to perform functions on our behalf, such as website hosting, data analysis and enhancement, order fulfillment, information technology and related infrastructure provision. BUJNYC thus may reveal user data to third parties including third-party affiliates. Additionally, we may use third-party credit card processing companies to bill users for donations. Except as permitted by applicable law, these third parties will have access to your Personal Information only as necessary to perform their functions.
b) Our Affiliates
We may share your Personal Information with our affiliates, agents, and business partners for the purposes described in this Policy.
c) As part of a corporate transaction
We may disclose Personal Information, as part of any actual or contemplated merger, sale, transfer of assets, acquisition, bankruptcy, or similar event, including related to due diligence conducted prior to such event, where permitted by law.
d) For legal purposes
We may disclose your Personal Information if we believe doing so is necessary to investigate or address claims or disputes relating to use of our Services, to satisfy requirements under applicable laws, regulations, or operating licenses or agreements, including requirements that apply to us in our capacity as service provider or contractor for another entity, or pursuant to legal process or governmental request, including from law enforcement. We may also disclose Personal Information to protect and enforce our rights (including for fraud prevention purposes and to prevent, investigate and prosecute criminal activities) and to assist others to do the same.
e) With additional notice or your consent
We may also disclose your Personal Information to other third parties, where we have provided specific notice to you or asked for your consent, as required by law.
f) Aggregated or de-identified information
Notwithstanding anything else in this Policy, we may aggregate or de-identify your data in a manner that it is no longer considered Personal Information for any purpose. We may disclose aggregated or de-identified data any purpose permitted by applicable law.
5. Children’s Privacy
The Services are not intended for or directed to children under the age of 13 (“Children” or “Child”), and we do not knowingly collect any Personal Information directly from Children via the Services. If you are the parent or guardian of a Child and have reason to believe that we may have inadvertently collected any Personal Information from or about your Child, please contact us using the details found in the “Contact Us” section, below, to request the deletion of such Personal Information.
6. Third Party Links and Websites
The Services may contain links to third-party websites and services. BUJNYC has no control over the privacy practices or the content of any of our business partners, advertisers, sponsors, or other websites to which we provide links. As such, we are not responsible for the content or the privacy policies of those third-party websites. You should check the applicable third-party privacy policy and terms of use when visiting any other websites.
Please be advised that your use of third-party payment processors is subject to the terms and conditions, including the privacy policies, of those companies. 7. Security
We have implemented and maintain commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect your Personal Information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. Please understand, however, that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. We therefore cannot guarantee the absolute security of our databases and systems nor warrant the absolute security of your Personal Information, nor can we guarantee that the information you supply will not be intercepted while being transmitted to and from us over the Internet. In particular, e-mail may not be secure, and you should therefore take special care in deciding what information you send to us via e-mail.
8. Your Choices
Your preferences about how we use your information are important to us and, when possible, we aim to honor them.
a) Cookies
Some web browsers are set to accept cookies by default, and you can usually choose to set your web browser to remove or reject certain cookies. Please note that if you choose to remove or reject cookies, doing so could affect the availability and functionality of the Services.
b) Marketing and Other Promotional Communications
You may opt out of receiving marketing and promotional communications from us by following the instructions in those communications or by emailing us at [email protected] to request opt out. Please note that you cannot opt out of receiving transactional e-mails related to your donations.
9. Do Not Track
Currently, various browsers offer a “Do Not Track” option, but there is no standard for commercial websites. At this time, we do not monitor, recognize, or honor any opt-out or do not track mechanisms, including general web browser “Do Not Track” settings and/or signals.
10. Notice to California Residents
Pursuant to California’s “Shine the Light” law (Civil Code Section § 1798.83), California residents have the right to request certain information regarding our disclosure of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes, including the names and addresses of those third parties, and examples of the types of services or products marketed by those third parties. To make such a request, please send an email to [email protected]. Please note, however, that we have never shared any Personal Information for a third party’s direct marketing purposes.
11. Notice to All Non-U.S. Residents
The Website is hosted in and provided from the United States and is intended for visitors located within the United States. Furthermore, BUJNYC operates in the United States, and any personal information collected pursuant to this Policy may be accessed from and/or stored by BUJNY, or those acting on BUJNYC’s behalf, in the United States. If you are located outside of the United States, please be aware that any information you provide to us will be transferred to the United States where the privacy laws may not be as protective as those in your country of origin. If you are located outside the United States and choose to use the Website, you consent to any transfer and processing of your Personal Information in accordance with this Policy, and you do so at your own risk.

This Policy is effective as of the “Last Updated” date at the top of this Policy. We may update or make changes to this Policy from time to time and without prior notice to you. We will communicate any material changes impacting your Personal Information in accordance with applicable law, which may include placing a prominent notice on the Website or by sending you an email (if you have provided one to us). Your continued use of our Services or our other Services after any update to this Policy will constitute your acceptance of our changes.
